CHANGE in LIFE

Betty Chao

Betty

Betty Po-Yi Chao, 22, Taiwanese. Staying in Seattle for 10 years.

Be With Nature :)

Betty Chao is currently a first year graduate student at UW School of Pharmacy. She uprooted from her family and friends in Taiwan and moved to Seattle in 1998. Knowing only the 26 English alphabets and the words “orange juice” made for a difficult beginning in her life here but she sought the opportunities to explore and now has become part and very comfortable with her American-Chinese background.

Betty didn’t have much choice as a 12 year old but her parents were determined to move here to provide her with a better education. Betty with her parents moved to Seattle because they already had relatives here and Seattle was known to be a very beautiful place to live.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TAIPEI & SEATTLE…

One of the more significant differences is activities for entertainment. In Taiwan, Betty always goes out for Karaoke and night market with friends during spare time. Here in Seattle, she enjoys outdoor activities such as Kayaking, running, camping, and being with the nature. This has now become an important part of Betty’s life that she didn’t get a chance to do as much in Taiwan.

WHAT CHANGED DURING THESE 10 YEARS?

The above difference definitely changed Betty’s perspectives on life. In Taiwan, her eyes are focused on neon lights and materialistic beauty but in Seattle, it is a lot easier for her to pull herself away from all of that and just enjoy the scenery and make peace with the nature! This also gives her a chance to spend more quality time with family and friends and focus on things that are more truly important to her.

FEAR CHANGE?

Betty believes most of the changes are very positive such as being independent and that includes learning how to cook, fix electronics, sewing her own clothes and much more! This also made Betty appreciate her parents a lot more and she was able to mature faster after going through these changes.

Betty loves both Taiwan and Seattle but she enjoys living in Seattle more now. She plans to stay in Seattle and visit Taiwan once awhile! What she looks forward more in her future in Seattle is being with people who she loves and doing what she loves as her career with an open mind.
